At the DMV because of a car?
A lot of Reno DMV appointments are people sorting out a vehicle. If that's you:
- Just bought one privately? Sort the title transfer and smog check before you go.
- Selling your old car? List it free on Nevada Auto Exchange — we'll even write the listing for you.
- Still shopping? Browse local Reno cars, or set an alert and we'll email you when a match lists.
Getting a Reno DMV appointment is now the only way in: since December 2025 every Nevada DMV office, Reno included, is appointment-only, with no walk-ins for in-person services anywhere in the state. Here is the clean version of how to book one, which appointment type to pick, what to bring, and what trips most people up.
Use Dash Pass to book
Nevada uses a system called Dash Pass for all appointments and virtual queuing. Start at dmv.nv.gov and look for "Make an Appointment." You can book up to 90 days in advance.
- Pick the correct transaction type (driver licence, REAL ID, title and registration, road test, etc.). Picking the wrong type can void your appointment at the counter — biggest single trip-up.
- Last-minute Wednesday slots tend to release the night before at 8 p.m. for metropolitan offices. Useful if you need to be seen quickly.
Which appointment type should you pick?
Choosing the wrong transaction type is the single most common reason an appointment gets voided at the counter. Match your reason to the right one before you book:
- Vehicle registration / title transfer — you bought a car, are transferring a title, or registering a newly-bought or out-of-state vehicle. Pick "Title and Registration."
- Driver licence / REAL ID — renewing, upgrading to a REAL ID, or getting a first Nevada licence. Pick "Driver License."
- Road test — the actual driving test. This is separate from "Driver License" — pick "Road Test," the most-often-mis-selected type.
- New Nevada resident — your licence and your vehicle both need doing; they are usually two separate appointments.

What to bring — vehicle registration
For registering a vehicle in Reno you will generally need:
- Proof of identity (one document — current driver licence or ID is the easy choice).
- Proof of your Social Security number (one document — Social Security card, recent W-2, or pay stub).
- Two proofs of Nevada residency at your current address, both dated within the last 60 days. Common combinations: utility bill + bank statement, utility bill + lease, etc.
- Vehicle title (signed over to you, with sale price and odometer filled in) — or current out-of-state title and registration if you are a new resident.
- Proof of Nevada insurance on the vehicle.
- Smog certificate if your vehicle requires emissions testing (most 1968+ gas/diesel vehicles in urban Washoe and Clark counties).
- Payment — registration fees and the Governmental Services Tax. Bring a card to be safe.
Booking a vehicle registration or title-transfer appointment
If your visit is about a car — registering one you just bought, transferring a title after a private sale, or registering an out-of-state vehicle — pick "Title and Registration" in Dash Pass and bring the documents above. Three Nevada specifics that catch people out:
- You have 30 days from the purchase date to register a vehicle. Book as soon as you have the signed title in hand.
- Plates stay with the seller in Nevada, not the car — so a car you just bought needs its own registration and new plates. Full walkthrough in the Nevada title transfer guide.
- Smog first, if required — most 1968+ petrol and diesel vehicles in urban Washoe County need a current emissions test before they can be registered.
Buying or selling locally? Nevada Auto Exchange is the free, local way to buy and sell cars across Reno, Sparks and Carson City. List your car free (we write the listing for you) or browse what's for sale — no commission, no out-of-state noise.
If you are new to Nevada
Bring your current out-of-state licence, your out-of-state vehicle title or registration, two proofs of Nevada residency (60-day rule), and current insurance. There is a registration window for new residents — book early.
REAL ID appointments in Reno
A REAL ID (the star-marked licence now needed to board domestic flights) is handled in person at the Reno office under a "Driver License / REAL ID" appointment — not a vehicle appointment. Bring proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Nevada residency dated within 60 days (the same residency documents you'd bring to register a car).
How long does a Reno DMV appointment take?
With an appointment and the right documents, most transactions take 20–45 minutes once you're called, and the wait to be seen is short if you arrive on time — the appointment-only system exists precisely to kill the old walk-in queues. What blows the time budget is missing paperwork: a forgotten proof of residency or an unsigned title means rebooking, not a same-day fix. Bring everything in a folder.
How to skip the wait
- Book early. Reno-area appointments fill up — 2–4 weeks out is common.
- Watch for Wednesday-night cancellations at 8 p.m. for last-minute slots.
- Try online first. A surprising amount can be done at dmv.nv.gov without going in — renewals, address changes, duplicate registration.
- Arrive 10 minutes early with everything in a folder. Missing one document means rebooking.
Can't get a Reno appointment? Try a nearby office
If every Reno DMV appointment slot is booked out when you need one, you are not stuck. The full-service office in Carson City (555 Wright Way, about 30 minutes south) handles the same registration, title and licence transactions and often has earlier availability than the Reno office on Galletti Way. Book it the same way in Dash Pass, just pick the Carson City office. Other northern-Nevada offices are listed in the office locator at dmv.nv.gov. Whichever office you pick, take the printable Reno DMV checklist so a missing document doesn't cost you the slot.
What you cannot do online
Most first-time titling and registration (especially private-party sales) still needs an in-person visit. New residents and out-of-state title transfers also do.

With an appointment and the correct documents, most transactions take about 20–45 minutes once you are called. Arriving on time keeps the wait short; missing paperwork is what causes delays and rebooking.
Where is the Reno DMV office?
305 Galletti Way, Reno, NV 89512. Phone: (775) 684-4368.
How far in advance can I book a Reno DMV appointment?
Up to 90 days in advance via Dash Pass. Slots fill 2–4 weeks out at the Reno office — book as soon as you know you need to go in.
How do I get a same-day or next-day DMV appointment in Reno?
Last-minute Wednesday-evening slots typically release at 8 p.m. for metropolitan offices including Reno. Refresh the Dash Pass calendar at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday night to catch cancellations and newly-released slots for the rest of the week.
What do I need to bring to a Nevada DMV appointment to register a car?
Proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, two proofs of Nevada residency (dated within the last 60 days), the vehicle title (signed over with sale price and odometer), proof of Nevada insurance, a smog certificate if the vehicle requires it, and payment (card recommended).
Do I need an appointment for a REAL ID in Reno?
Yes. A REAL ID is issued in person only, under a "Driver License / REAL ID" appointment booked through Dash Pass. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two 60-day proofs of Nevada residency.
Can I register my car online in Nevada, or do I need an appointment?
Renewals and some changes can be done online at dmv.nv.gov, but first-time titling and registration — especially after a private-party sale or moving from out of state — needs an in-person "Title and Registration" appointment.
How long do I have to register a car after buying it in Nevada?
30 days from the date of purchase. Book the DMV appointment as soon as you have the signed title in hand.
How do I schedule a DMV driving test in Reno?
Use Dash Pass at dmv.nv.gov, pick the Reno office, and select "Road Test" as the transaction type — not "Driver License," which is a separate appointment. The road test booking is the most-frequently-mis-selected appointment type and the most common cause of having an appointment voided at the counter.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Always confirm the current process at dmv.nv.gov before your visit — the DMV updates rules periodically.
