Nevada DMV in Reno: Appointments, What to Bring, and How to Skip the Wait

May 31, 2026

Since December 2025, every Nevada DMV office — Reno included — is appointment-only. No walk-ins for in-person services, anywhere in the state. Here is the clean version of how to book, what to bring, and what trips up most people.

Use Dash Pass to book

Nevada uses a system called Dash Pass for all appointments and virtual queuing. Start at dmv.nv.gov and look for "Make an Appointment." You can book up to 90 days in advance.

  • Pick the correct transaction type (driver licence, REAL ID, title and registration, road test, etc.). Picking the wrong type can void your appointment at the counter — biggest single trip-up.
  • Last-minute Wednesday slots tend to release the night before at 8 p.m. for metropolitan offices. Useful if you need to be seen quickly.

What to bring — vehicle registration

For registering a vehicle in Reno you will generally need:

  • Proof of identity (one document — current driver licence or ID is the easy choice).
  • Proof of your Social Security number (one document — Social Security card, recent W-2, or pay stub).
  • Two proofs of Nevada residency at your current address, both dated within the last 60 days. Common combinations: utility bill + bank statement, utility bill + lease, etc.
  • Vehicle title (signed over to you, with sale price and odometer filled in) — or current out-of-state title and registration if you are a new resident.
  • Proof of Nevada insurance on the vehicle.
  • Smog certificate if your vehicle requires emissions testing (most 1968+ gas/diesel vehicles in urban Washoe and Clark counties).
  • Payment — registration fees and the Governmental Services Tax. Bring a card to be safe.

If you just bought a car

You have 30 days from the date of purchase to register a vehicle in Nevada. Book the appointment as soon as you have the signed title in hand and the smog certificate (if needed).

If you are new to Nevada

Bring your current out-of-state licence, your out-of-state vehicle title or registration, two proofs of Nevada residency (60-day rule), and current insurance. There is a registration window for new residents — book early.

How to skip the wait

  • Book early. Reno-area appointments fill up — 2–4 weeks out is common.
  • Watch for Wednesday-night cancellations at 8 p.m. for last-minute slots.
  • Try online first. A surprising amount can be done at dmv.nv.gov without going in — renewals, address changes, duplicate registration.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early with everything in a folder. Missing one document means rebooking.

What you cannot do online

Most first-time titling and registration (especially private-party sales) still needs an in-person visit. New residents and out-of-state title transfers also do.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Always confirm the current process at dmv.nv.gov before your visit — the DMV updates rules periodically.
