Best AWD Cars for Tahoe Winters and Reno Snow

May 31, 2026

Winter in Northern Nevada is the test that separates good cars from genuinely capable ones. If your weekends head toward Mount Rose, Truckee or Squaw, the driveline matters as much as the brand. Here are the AWD and 4x4 picks worth shortlisting on the used market.

The classic AWD daily-drivers

Subaru Outback

The unofficial state car of Reno. Standard symmetrical AWD, decent ground clearance, plenty of cargo space. Hugely common locally so parts and indie-shop expertise are everywhere.

Subaru Forester

Outback in SUV form, slightly more upright. Same AWD strengths. The boxer-engine head gasket history on older 2.5-litre models is the well-known weak spot — verify it has been done or budget for it.

Toyota RAV4 AWD / Hybrid

Reliable, easy to live with. Hybrid versions cost more but excel on long Tahoe runs.

Honda CR-V AWD

Civilised, roomy, dependable. Less capable off pavement than a Subaru but more than enough for plowed roads.

The proper 4x4s

Toyota 4Runner

Body-on-frame, low-range transfer case, durable. The right answer if you regularly leave pavement or chase storms.

Jeep Wrangler / Grand Cherokee

Wrangler for pure capability; Grand Cherokee for capability with everyday comfort. Check 4WD engagement carefully on a test drive.

Half-ton trucks with 4WD

F-150, Silverado, Ram 1500 — all standard around here. Get the tow package if you tow anything to the lake.

Things that matter as much as AWD

  • Tyres. A 2WD vehicle with proper snow tyres often outperforms an AWD with summer rubber. Budget for winter tyres.
  • Ground clearance. Unplowed driveways, parking lots and Tahoe access roads punish low cars.
  • Heater output and defrost. Test them on the drive.
  • Battery age. Cold mornings expose a tired battery fast.
  • Heated seats and steering wheel. Not essential, but very welcome at 6,200 feet.

Before you buy

  • Engage the AWD or 4WD system on the test drive in a safe spot.
  • Look underneath for fresh undercarriage damage from rocks or curbs.
  • Run a vehicle-history check for accident damage.
  • Book an independent pre-purchase inspection.
